VOLUME 68                    NUMBER 5                     MAY 2025

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 1 PETER 4:17

THE Church, of which Christ is the head, will never fail, falter, or close its doors and shutter operations until the Rapture. The local Church, including Beulah Ann, can do all those things. To remain the source of Christ’s message and power, we must stand on the Word of God and glorify Him by serving the Lord Jesus Christ under the power of the Holy Spirit. We can’t be concerned about the world’s judgment of the Church. Sinners will do what they did to Christ. They will mock, curse, and abuse us. But we must be about our Father’s business. Giving up isn’t an option because we know the horrific consequences facing the lost.

From the day of Pentecost to now, unrepentant sinners hurl accusations, insults, and violence against the Church and her members. Give glory to God when it happens to you. The world judges us while demanding we not judge them. It would be better for them if we could judge. We have no power to destroy them in hell, unlike God. He will be their judge, jury, and executioner. His judgment is pure, perfect, and righteous. No one bearing their own sin and guilt will escape.

Judgment must begin at the house of God. The Church must examine itself. Are we guilty of the sins of which we stand accused? If so, repent and return to the faith that saves. We preach a simple message: Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. It was good for Paul and Silas, and it’s good for you and me. If judgment falls on those in Christ, how much worse will it be for those who’ve rejected Him? Winning souls is wise! Preach the Word!                                                                 ~~Pastor Greg

v Dear Members of Beulah Ann Baptist Church,

On behalf of staff and students at CMHS, I would like to thank you for your continued support for our Knight’s Great Hall. We have multiple students that utilize this resource on a regular basis. Thank you!

                            Amy Cobb, Counselor

v Thank you to all the men who worked to prepare for our May 10 Community Dinner and everyone who contributed in any way. We sent out 32 dinners to shut-ins. Also, I am happy to report that Seth Neal has been elected to replace me as President of the AB Men’s Ministry. I know he will do a great job.

                              Roger Kingery

CONGRATULATIONS to Josh Holley, who finished the Boston Marathon for the third time, with his best time yet, 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 39 seconds! We heard that his dad, Scotty Holley, also a runner, was caught out running when we had the recent hail storm! Ouch.

You know how they throw the ball into the crowd after they win the game? That’s not allowed in bowling. I know that now.

MISSION PROJECTS

In March, our project was the Uganda Building Project. Bobby Bowen’s Global Outreach coworkers in Jinja, Uganda, are building a center for education and help of all kinds. Our goal was to pay for a latrine for the new facility! (Instead of the open sewers in this city.) Our goal was originally $3,500, but increased costs raised this to $4,000. In March, we gave $3,173, but more was received in April and May, and the goal was met! Missionary Bobby Bowen sent the following message on Facebook – “I am so excited to get this project started. Thank you so much for all you and my home church has done! I love you all.”

In April, we focused on Camp Ona! We donated $625 to be used to purchase cleaning supplies and items necessary for repairs in order to get things ready for the upcoming camping season. Thanks so much!

Our May Mission Project is the BABC Disaster Relief Ministry. We need to have tools and supplies readily available when disasters occur. To contribute, please write “Disaster Relief” on your check.

The ABWM Community Outreach Project for April was new stuffed animals for our First Responders – The Ona Volunteer Fire Dept, the Ona EMS station, and the Sheriff’s Field Office. They use these toys to comfort children who are caught up in situations such as fires, car crashes, and domestic violence. Your response to this project was wonderful. These were delivered May 4 along with large trays of homemade cookies (our May project) for these great first responders. We appreciate them so much. In turn, they were thankful for the toys and treats.

The ABWM June Community Outreach Project will be snacks for the Veteran’s Home in Barboursville. These are made available in the store, and sometimes used as prizes or awards. We need individually wrapped packs of crackers, nuts, cookies, etc. Please place these in the

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

Our Easter Egg Hunt was April 19th, and our theme was “Jesus Paid It All.” Of course we had crafts, singing and lunch for the kids and their families. But the best part was when Kara Litteral had some of our kids dress up as people in the Easter story and those kids told the story of why we celebrate Easter. It was meaningful for everyone to see. Pastor Greg was there to emphasize the true meaning of Easter. Then off to the egg hunt! Special thanks to everyone who brought in candy and toys. On Easter Sunday the downstairs was full of children singing praises to our King.

On May 4th it was the Winter Contest winner’s trip to Pump Up the Fun. They all had a great time. Spring contest will end this month. Thank you, parents for faithfully bringing your child. Vacation Bible school is being planned. “What a Mess VBS” June 8th – 12th, 5:30 dinner, 6-8 Bible school. Pray for our children.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Duane Adkins called for men to fill the choir box on Mother’s Day, and twenty-one of them responded, and wow, did they sing their hearts out. Magnificent! Adult Ministries leaders Jeanne Erin Carter presented gifts to the oldest mother present, Rowena Bonde, and the newest mother, Tia Hutchinson Queen. So sweet! Every lady present was given a quilted bowl cozy (for retrieving a hot bowl from a microwave, or keeping you hands warm when you eat a bowl of ice cream!) and some candy. Big thanks to Karen Caldwell who made all of them!

Fix your thoughts on God and God will fix your thoughts.                           J. John

I was sitting here eating lunch when I realized cottage cheese is not actually cheese. It just a curd to me.

 BLESSED EASTER

Our Sanctuary Choir, under the direction of Duane Adkins, brought a selection of favorite songs from past cantatas: “Welcome the King,” “Behold How He Loves,” “Were You There Medley,” and “Because He Lives Medley.” Soloist Jeanne Lunsford and Narrator J. D. Dillon did wonderfully. Our Pastor brought a powerful sermon entitled, “Seek Jesus” from Matthew 28:1-6. Hearts were full from this special and sacred service.

YOUTH MINISTRIES

BAMBY did a beautiful job presenting “The Voices of Easter” at our Sonrise Service. The program focused on the people present at the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Pilate (Justin Morrison) spoke on his role followed by The Soldier assigned to Jesus (Caleb Hansen). Next was the guard at the tomb (Beckett Wallace) followed by the ladies arriving to the tomb (Kaylee McComas and Audrey and the disciples Brady Wallace). Reese Hunt sang 2 songs beautifully and Hannah Wallace and Rachel Hunt narrated the skit.

As always, the teens/young adults did an astounding job!                    ~~Mitzi Beckett

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

J  We were surprised by a new duo on April 27, when Angie Neal and son Seth Neal brought the special music in the morning service, “How Jesus Saved a Wretch Like Me,” and again in the evening service, “Come Morning.” Great job!

J The Sanctuary Choir was on the road again on Tuesday night, April 28, where we sang for revival at Barker Ridge Baptist Church. The evangelist was Danny Hayden of Scott Town, OH, who spoke from Genesis 3:1. We filled the choir box and got to see many old friends. Denny Dailey has many memories of this church where his late father, Denver Dailey, was pastor for many years.

J As of this writing the handicap ramp at the back door is being replaced. The old one was over 50 years old and was showing signs of age. Thank you, Trustees.

QUILTING RETREAT

On Saturday, April 26, our two quilting groups, Sew Blest and In Stitches, invited the quilting group from Faith Goodwill Baptist Church in Lavalette for a day of quilting and fellowship. Nine ladies from that church joined with thirteen of us for a total of twenty-two quilters, who finished eleven quilt tops with patriotic themes. When quilted, most of these will be donated to WV Quilts of Valor to be given to veterans, and the rest will be given to local veterans.

This is the third year the retreat has been here, and our quilters have traveled to Lavalette twice, and will visit there again in the fall.

They enjoyed both breakfast and lunch, and wonderful fellowship and lots of laughter. If you have an interest in quilting, no matter your skill level, you are welcome to join in. Watch the bulletin for meeting times.

NOTICE: We ordered beautiful sun catchers to commemorate our Sesquicentennial, made by Blenko Glass Co. They make a wonderful keepsake of the occasion. They are round, blue, and feature the church anniversary date. We had to order in bulk, and find that we still have a few. Please contact us if you want one. They are $14, which is cost, we are not making any profit.

LET’S GO CAMPING!

April 25-27 was our Spring Camp-a-rama. It was another successful trip to Beech Fork State Park.  The weather was true spring weather, you never knew what you were gonna get. One minute it was warm and sunshiny the next rainy and cold.

No matter what the weather does if you get to sit and enjoy the beauty that God created you are gonna have a good time.

We had around 40 for dinner Saturday evening. We enjoyed pulled pork and brisket with all of the fixings!!! We are truly blessed with amazing cooks.

We enjoyed Sunday School inside Greg and Pauletta Wallace’s spacious camper. It was nice and toasty since it was very chilly outside.

Thank you to everyone who came out and participated. Now let’s get ready for the Fall Camp-a-rama!                                     ~~Erin Carter

IF

If earth can be this beautiful,

What will heaven be?

If human eyes may view unfurled

In luscious quantity

The tributes made by nature

Framed in majesty,

Open to the passerby,

What will the spirit see?

If earth can be this wonderful,

What will heaven hold?

If human minds my rise each day

New dramas to unfold,

Perceiving and enjoying

Thoughts once found to mold;

What will heaven have in store,

What mysteries untold?

VOLUME 68                    NUMBER 4                      APRIL 2025

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

1 Corinthians 15:17 – And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the hub around which the entire Christian Faith revolves. Without the Resurrection, we’re just another religion among thousands. With it, we’re the only one of our kind. Jesus claimed He was the way, the truth, and the life. He told Mary and Martha that He was the Resurrection and the life. So, either He is, or He isn’t. What side of the fence will you stand on? Will you believe the gospels and accept that Jesus died and rose bodily from the dead? Or will you doubt and reject the event altogether? The great American Statesman Benjamin Franklin once said, “When in doubt, don’t.” That’s excellent advice.

Do you doubt the Resurrection? “Don’t!” Examine the evidence from Scripture. It demands a sound investigation. The women who discovered the empty tomb were unqualified to testify in court based on 1st-century Jewish custom. If the gospel writers were to fabricate a story of Christ rising from the dead, they wouldn’t use these first-person witnesses. Showing Himself alive to the Apostles and allowing them to touch His risen body inspired them to give their lives to spread His message of hope, love, and salvation by grace through faith. And it wasn’t only 11 men He visited. More than 500 saw Him at one time.

Examine the transformation that took place after the Resurrection. Men and women died violent, gruesome deaths because of their faith in Christ and the guarantee certified by the Father in the Resurrection of the Son. I don’t doubt the Resurrection. My faith is not empty or hollow, and my sins are gone, washed clean by the precious blood of Jesus. Once you understand the power of the Resurrection, you’ll know the power of forgiveness and the depth of God’s love for you.                                                                                                                                                                                      ~~Pastor Greg

v Dear Church Family,

I wanted to take a moment to extend our heartfelt thanks to you all, for any & everything you did for our mother, Naomi Dailey. The many of you who called, visited, sent cards to her this last year during her declining health. She truly loved being a member of Beulah Ann, singing in the choir, and of course bossing around the decorating committee! As most of you know, Mom was a jokester and enjoyed the playful friendships she had with many in the church. Also, thanks for the donations of Bibles from both the church and her Sunday School Class. Please remember her fondly, as the older lady who was crazy about mowing her grass!

The Entire Dailey Family – Robin, Scott, Jack, Brittney, Alex, Corey, Zack, Josh, Grace, Noel, Ellie, Matthew & Emma.

v Beulah Ann Congregation,

 CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

March was an interesting month. The 2nd Sunday of March Jesus kids usually sing at Paramount Assisted Living. But they had sickness so we did not go. Then the rain and water rising postponed our Winter Attendance Contest trip till May. Sixteen children came faithfully to church, brought their Bible and said their Bible verse. We were able to have our Quarterly Birthday party for kids who have birthdays the first 3 months of the year.

In April, Jesus kids were able to go singing at Paramount Assisted Living. There were 5 who were able to attend and they were amazing singing different older songs and some new ones. The residents love to hear them sing. Thank you parents for encouraging them. Jesus Kids say, “Thank You” to Cearra Scarberry for fixing dinner for them or should we say Breakfast? (Brenner).

We are getting ready for our Easter Egg Hunt on April 19th at Beulah Ann. Kids are excited. They will also tell the true meaning of Easter in a little presentation. Our theme is HAPPY, HAPPY DAY when Jesus rose from the grave!

We are also planning for Vacation Bible School June 8th – 12th, “What a Mess VBS”. Could you help us? One week of blessing for you and the kids. There is a sign-up sheet on the front foyer table.

Children’s Ministry wants to say Thank you to all the church members who brought in eggs, candy and toys for our Easter Egg Hunt. The kids will love them.

Pray for our kids.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY COMPLETED

The Ladies Bible Study began February 3 at 11:00 and February 6 at 5:30 pm for a 6-week study entitled, “You Are Never Alone” by Max Lucado. We had wonderful fellowship, discussion and a variety of snacks. The lessons were focused on miracles Jesus had done and our personal experiences in our life or have witnessed a miracle. Ladies were asked to reflect on miracles, the character of Christ, and God’s involvement in our everyday life. God is with us when we are stuck. God is with us in the storm. God spoke to Moses, “I Am that I AM.” God is with us in the dark. God is with us when we need grace. These are some topics discussed in our Bible study. It was challenging, due to flooding, snow and ice storms, but after several reschedules, we did complete our study. We finished the study by watching the movie of Esther. As a child of God, we are never alone. He is always there waiting on us to talk to Him. His Grace is sufficient.

I am planning next Ladies Bible Study for the Fall.                              ~~Connie Chapman

 YOUTH MINISTRIES

This year, BAMBY again participated in the Rec the Weekend.  This event is a collaboration of 8 churches to gather our Middle and High Schoolers together for a time of fun and Fellowship.

This year, we started at the Sports Complex where the teens played flag football, waffle ball and kickball.  After a couple hours, we walked to the Rec Center for our Worship Service followed by Rock Climbing, Swimming, basketball and fun. All that attended had a great time!!

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

J  The Monday following revival, our Sanctuary Choir sang in revival at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where our evangelist, Chuck Elkins, is pastor. Ryan Massie was their evangelist and brought the message from Romans 12:15 while wearing boxing gloves! He urged us to hang up our gloves. (It made sense if you heard the message.) An added bonus that night was the sunset we viewed as we drove home along the ridge. God’s handiwork!

J We had never heard the Taylor Brothers who were our guests for our 5th Sunday Night Sing on March 30. Brothers Logan and Todd were the singers, with dad Todd on drums. They were all excellent musicians. Logan was the author of some of the songs they sang, such as “Pray Till Something Happens.”

J Well, April 6 was certainly different. Due to heavy rains, Howell’s Mill Road was flooded in the three usual spots, starting Friday night. From the weather predictions, it seemed certain there would be no way to get to church on Sunday. Those of us on Howell’s Mill between the Interstate bridge overpass, and the low gaps just on either side of the Mud River Bridge, are sort of on an island. Patty Morrison, right in the middle of the island, took it upon herself to arrange for a service to be held at Camp Ona! She visited many neighbors, including many who do not attend Beulah Ann, and some who do not attend church anywhere, and many were interested! She made calls and posted on Facebook, and we were ready to meet there at 10 am Sunday morning. But, guess what? The water went down more rapidly than expected, and everyone was able to get to church after all. But with little notice that the water was down, attendance was a little low, and all the adults met together in one big Sunday School Class. We just go with the flow!

J On Monday, April 7, the Sanctuary Choir was on the road again to Lighthouse Baptist Church in Milton, where Tim Messinger is pastor. Rev. Mark Finley brought an inspiring message from Matt. 27-36, and Psalm 22:1-16, which reflects the mind of Christ on the cross.

Palm Sunday was a wonderful day. Cassie Maynor and Jeanne Lunsford sang a version of “Hallelujah” using the lyrics Cassie had written. Wonderful! We observed Communion, and in the evening, we had guest singers, Southern Sunday. This duo played guitar and mandolin and brought many songs, most of them bluegrass style.

VACATION TIME

Our good pastor and his wife took a well-deserved vacation trip in March. So, Sunday morning March 23, his brother Brooke Lunsford stood in for him and did a great job. Brooke spoke about the power we have in God, and the spiritual gifts we receive when we are saved. As Greg often does, Brooke also gave thanks to Chester Bragg and his late wife, for bringing the young brothers to church and church camp.

In the evening service, Jacob Marshall, 35-yr. old assistant pastor from Antioch Baptist, brought us a talk based on his doctoral thesis, “Jesus Barriers in Eastern Cabell County Churches.” He had done intensive research and presented everyone with a written copy of the results. He had selected seven churches in eastern Cabell County, including us, (like the seven churches in Revelation) and had interviewed pastors and leaders from those churches. The results are too lengthy to report here, but in essence, we need to love each other, be a family, care about people, love outsiders, be welcoming, choose good leaders, and love God and His Word. His doctoral degree is from Dallas Theological Seminary, where J. Vernon McGee, David Jeremiah, and Chuck Swindoll were scholars.

On Wednesday night, our pulpit was filled by George Leese, pastor of Good Shepard Baptist Church. He brought a sermon from Psalms 89:1-11. It was good to hear him again. He and his good wife Linda have attended here for quite a few years, and still attend evening services a lot.

NOTICE: We ordered beautiful blue sun catchers to commemorate our Sesquicentennial, made by Blenko Glass Co. They make a wonderful keepsake of the occasion. We had to order in bulk, and find that we have a few left. Please contact us if you want one. They are $14, which is cost, we are not making any profit.

EASTER

The air is like a butterfly

With frail blue wings.

The happy earth looks at the sky

And sings.

REVIVAL, CONTINUED

We were in the midst of revival when our last issue was printed, in which we reported on services Sun.-Tues, March 9-11. On Wednesday, our own Sanctuary Choir provided the special music. Pastor Chuck Elkins, our evangelist, brought a message from Proverbs 29:18, entitled “Two Clicks.” Where there is no vision, we have no direction from God, and people go their own way.

The choir from Susannah Baptist Church on Fudges Creek sang for us on Thursday night. Among the songs they sang were “Let Me Tell You About Jesus,” “I’m Glad I Know Who Jesus Is,” and “He Touched Me.” Duane Adkins read a portion of a column from a local Webster County newspaper, about Susannah’s pianist, Michael Bowyer. He has a great natural talent. We are always glad to hear him play.

Chuck’s message was from John 19:28, “I Thirst.” Jesus is a sympathetic sufficient Savior. Chuck said, “We can’t be sinless in this life, but we can strive to sin less.”

Friday, the last night of revival, our evangelist got a stomach virus and was unable to be here! He was very apologetic and stressed about it, but it was understandable. After singing by the choir from Lighthouse (“I Call it Home,” “I’m Looking for Jesus to Come Someday” and many others), our own Pastor Greg filled the pulpit. He read from I Peter 3:15 about Sanctification. We took a love offering for Chuck and everyone agreed it had been a wonderful revival, and we are refreshed.

March 2025 Newsletter

VOLUME 68                    NUMBER 3                        MARCH 2025

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

1 Corinthians 15:26 – The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Evangelist Chuck Elkins reminded us that there will be a last; a last day, last salvation opportunity, last witness, last lung’s breath, last heartbeat… and then, eternity. Your decision of faith, repent, and believe the gospel, or reject Jesus Christ determines your last destination. Hell is real. Jesus talked more about it than heaven. He came to purchase your redemption. In doing so, Christ conquered death. Sin, death, hell, Satan, they’re all defeated enemies, although not yet destroyed. That will come soon.

It’s no secret that the world is struggling. Scripture is clear about the times and what is coming. And yet, many decent people refuse to get in out of the rain of sin and self-righteousness. Is sin so good that it gives eternal life? Of course not. Sin brings death. Can one be good enough to earn salvation? Never! Jesus said, “I am the way…” He left no room for others. What about the church? A church is only as strong as its members. Churches don’t fail because they lack members. They fail because members refuse to obey the Scriptures to assemble, serve, worship, and sacrifice. Church has become an inconvenience to many. What’s it to you?

We’re coming out of revival and turning toward Resurrection Sunday. I encourage you to search your heart with your Bible open to Jeremiah 17:9. Let the Holy Spirit reveal your place in the body of Christ. Come to service. Worship God! Praise, honor, and glorify Him! The world is deceived and following a path of destruction. Sadly, many self-described Christians lean on their own understanding and make their own rules about serving God. Disobedience has one cure: repentance and forgiveness. Don’t let pride lead you away from Christ. “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matt. 7:23).                                                                                                                                                                             ~~Pastor Greg

 THANK YOU

v Thank you so much for all the prayers, cards and calls during my recent illness. A special thanks to a dear neighbor who has brought me and Betty so much food, you are so kind.                                Nellie Gillispie

v Dear Beulah Ann Family – I’m so sorry I had to miss the Chili Cook-off due to weather. Your continued support of our Great Hall is simply amazing. The counselors and social worker take kids to the pantry daily. What a blessing it is to be able to make our students feel “normal” by something as simple as snacks and toiletries! Additionally, having the financial ability to provide a student what they need (such as shoes, a book bag, a coat, etc.) immediately and without question brings us so much peace and gratitude. From the bottom of our hears, thank you. Please keep all of our educators in your prayers.

v To the congregation of the Beulah Ann Baptist Church, I want to say thank you for your donation to Cabell Midland’s Knights Great Hall. This donation will go a long way to help the less fortunate in our school and community. As the Principal, I can’t express enough how much this means. I love you all.

 MISSION PROJECTS

In February, we are supporting the Huntington City Mission. founded in 1939. It is the only full-service shelter in a fifty-mile radius of Huntington. They offer a safe place to sleep, a warm meal and hope for a better future as they share the love of Christ. We raised $1,434 for them.

In March, our project is Uganda Building Project. Bobby Bowen spoke to us a few months ago about this project, and we have chosen this month to direct our support to it. Her Global Outreach coworkers in Jinja, Uganda, are building a center for education and help of all kinds. Our goal is to pay for a latrine for the new facility! (Instead of the open sewers in this city.) Our goal is $3,500 or more! To give, please write “Uganda” on the memo line of your check.

The ABWM Community Outreach Project for February was hats and gloves for the men, women and children at the Huntington City Mission. Thanks to all you contributed. In March, we are helping support the Uganda Building Project.

NOTICE: If you need a report of your tithes and offerings for 2024 for your tax return, please contact Brenda Lawson. You can call the church and leave a message at 304-743-5854.

MEN’S PRAYER BREAKFAST

The women of Beulah Ann’s ABWM and helpers were at Camp Ona bright and early on Saturday, Feb. 22 for the Guyandotte Baptist Association’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast.

Twenty-eight men (representing 9 churches) traveled the snow-covered roads to enjoy the big breakfast, and hear speaker Wayne Haynie. It was good to see Wayne again. Our church supported Wayne and his wife Mary years ago when they were Wycliffe Bible Translator workers. He is a member of Barboursville Baptist. It was also good to see Donnie Chapman, who has remained friends with Wayne over the years.

Wayne has a dedicated prayer life and was encouraging to the men present. Many prayers were offered that morning.

 CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

The Children’s Awards night was Sunday Feb. 23rd. The children shined with their pins they have earned on their sashes. They earn a pin by attending church, bringing their Bible and by saying their Bible verse for the month. We had 2 Bible verses for January and February to learn. We are so proud of them learning and remembering the verses.

The Jesus Kids also sang that night. This is the new 2025 group. A lot of young ones that are singing as much as the older ones. They also earn a pin for singing with the Jesus Kids. We are proud of them too. Abilene Chapman sang “Jesus Loves Me” as a solo, what a beautiful voice.

The Bible Trivia that night was interesting. Of course, Pastor Greg had to ask the adults questions to make it fair. But the children showed how much they have been learning in Sunday School and in Children’s Church.

The children are in the middle of their attendance contest now for February and March. The winners will be announced the first Sunday in April.

We have begun collecting Easter eggs and candy for the Big Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 19th from 11-1.

We welcome Pat Edwards back to help us in the Children’s church nursery.

 GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

J  We have enjoyed much “home-grown” music recently. On Feb. 9, Macs Hall went to the piano and played and sang for us. We so enjoyed “The Family of God,” and “Turn Your Radio On.” Then on Feb. 23, James Perry gave his rendition of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” and “Jesus It’s Me Again.” Reece Hunt did a wonderful job singing “Hallelujah” on Sunday morning, March 2. We have a lot of talent in our congregation.

REVIVAL IN PROGRESS!

Revival kicked off Sunday morning, Mar. 9! Jessica Akers of Wayne County, playing guitar, was our special music, singing “A Birth I Can’t Remember and One I Can’t Forget,” “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord,” and “I Just Want to Thank You Lord.” She noted that the last song was written by her family member, Judy Marshall.

Evangelist Chuck Elkins brought a powerful sermon from Ephesians 3:20 entitled “Him That is Able.” He pointed out the Lord is able to save, able to deliver us from fire, able to heal, and able to provide all our needs.

Chuck was raised in this community and has memories of the “old” church, where his parents often sang for us.

On Sunday night, we were glad to hear Gary Sargent, now 87 years old, still singing for the Lord with his guitarist, Eddie Rushbrook. They sang several songs, ending with “The Family Bible.” What a blessing.

Chuck’s message was from Proverbs 27:1, entitled, “It’s Too Late.”

On Monday night, the choir from Chuck’s church, Mt. Zion Baptist, sang for us, and Chuck preached from Job 19:25-27.

Ryan and Julie Thompson of Salt Rock Community Church joined us on Tuesday night, with Ryan on guitar, singing several songs, including “Wayfaring Stranger,” “Then I Can Still Go Free, and “Word of God Speak.”

Our evangelist read I Chronicles 4:9-10, which is the prayer of Jabez. Like Jabez, we can pray for 1. Blessings indeed; 2. To enlarge my coast (territory, people to whom we can witness); 3. Thy hand be upon me; and 4. Keep me from evil.

He told of going to Jamaica for his daughter’s wedding. At the table, they were not being served any coffee, which his wife loves. Someone told them that the custom there was if your cup is bottom up, they would not be served. If they laid it on its side, they would be served tea, and if they turned it up, they would be served coffee. The message is, if you turn up your cup, God will fill it up.

(We will report on the remaining days of the revival in our next issue.)

 NEWS FROM JAPAN

Recent letter from Sarah McCloy, International missionary from WV, serving at the location where David & Leslie Turley’s used to serve:

It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost my 2nd anniversary of living here in Sendai! These two years have flown by so quickly. I’m constantly in awe that God led me to this place. It truly feels like home!

This April will bring some major changes to my life here in Sendai. For the past two years, I’ve been attending a Japanese language school 5 days a week. When I first began, I spoke almost no Japanese. Now, I’m getting ready to graduate from the advanced level program! I still have a long way to go with my Japanese abilities, but I’m so thankful for all I’ve learned so far. I know that as I continue to minister here in Sendai, my Japanese will continue to improve.

Since my time at the language school is ending, my responsibilities at the church will increase. I will continue to co-lead the children’s ministry and preach at Shokei Baptist church. I also hope to begin teaching some English classes at the church to meet more of the local community.

My work at Shokei Gakuin is still being decided. There is a lot of programming I could assist with–Shokei schools go from kindergarten to university level. Please pray for God’s guidance over myself and the leadership of Shokei church and schools as we discern where I can best serve the ministry.

Recently, I was selected to compete in my language school’s speech contest for our cultural festival. I spoke about the importance of learning from each other’s worldviews. I was nervous about speaking in Japanese in front of over 300 people. However, I ended up winning the second-place prize!

WHY’S IT MATTER?

A recent social media comment by a preacher caught my attention. In his defense of the King James Version of the Bible, he boldly claimed that he could take the King James and correct the Greek. Friends, that’s blasphemy! He claims the English translation of the Bible is better than the Holy Spirit-inspired writings of the faithful men who penned them. He further claims, “Who cares what the Greek says?” We should all care because the original New Testament was written in Greek. Pride and arrogance run rampant in the pulpit in the 21st Century. It’s important to do word studies to learn the accurate and complete meanings of words translated from Greek or Hebrew into English. English doesn’t offer the detail that the original languages do. Be careful who you listen to. Those who make outlandish claims unsupported by biblical evidence are treading on thin ice over a chasm of hellfire. Why’s it matter? It matters because following false doctrines can keep the lost out of heaven and the saved unprofitable for the Lord.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace. – George Washington.

Spiritual warfare is real, and you are engaged in it. You can ignore or deny it, but it rages on. You can refuse to fight, but you’re still affected – essentially making yourself a willing prisoner of war and subject to those consequences. Do you know how to fight spiritually? Many Christians are completely clueless. At Beulah Ann, we’re learning how to fight biblically and win. Join us and get prepared!

Our enemy fights through the world, the flesh, and the devil. Engagement requires knowing from which plane the attack is coming and which weapon is most effective against it. The world comes externally: “… the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 JOHN 2:16). The flesh is internal. “Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” (Romans 7:17). The devil is external and frequently attacks the mind through subtle actions. “Ye shall not surely die:…” (Gen. 3:4). Eve’s dead. And so are all who sin.

To determine worldly attacks, evaluate the source from an eternal perspective. “Will this impact my relationship with God?” “Will this cause me to lose divine reward?” When the flesh intrudes, run! “Flee also youthful lusts: …” no matter what age you may be (2 Tim. 2:22), renew your mind (Rom. 12:2), and walk and be controlled by the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:16). Finally, to engage spiritual warfare waged by the devil, don’t flee. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Some don’t know they’re in a fight until they’re punched in the mouth. If you’re saved but struggling, you could be under spiritual attack. Learn how to fight back and win!

MISSION PROJECTS

Our January Mission Project was the Knight’s Great Hall at Cabell Midland High School, which provides food, toiletries and school supplies to teens in need. It is a confidential service administered by the school counselors, which includes our own Jenna McComas. A list of items which can be donated is on the foyer bulletin board. Between offerings and our Chili/Soup Cook-off, in January we raised $3,215 for the KGH!

In February, we are supporting the Huntington City Mission, founded in 1939. It is the only full-service shelter in a fifty-mile radius of Huntington. They offer a safe place to sleep, a warm meal and hope for a better future as they share the love of Christ. To give, write HCM on your check.

The ABWM Community Outreach Project for January was “undies” (briefs and socks) for women of all sizes at the Huntington City Mission. Thank you for your generous donations. Our February project continues to be HCM, but this month we are collecting new or gently used hats and gloves, for men, women, or children. To give, please place your donation in the basket in the foyer.

NOTICE: If you need a report of your tithes and offerings for 2024 for your tax return, please contact Brenda Lawson. You can call the church and leave a message at 304-743-5854.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

January 2025 started off with the winners of our November/December contest going bowling. Kids and adults had a blast. Thanks to Tom and Seth for driving the bus and van for us. Our new attendance contest begins now thru March. Wonder what trip is being planned for the winners?  Jesus Kids sang at Paramount Assisted Living last Sunday. The kids sang songs about Jesus’ love for us. Question was asked to each child “Oh do you love Jesus?” and they all responded “Yes, I Love Jesus.”

The Prayer Buddy ministry is beginning again with Casey Morrison as the Prayer Buddy Central contact.  This is where the adult church can have a child prayer buddy. They would pray for this child maybe send a birthday card, but mostly pray. The child also will pray for the adult. Which in this day and time our Children need prayers.  See Casey if you can take a child and remember them in prayer. Thank you.

ANNUAL CHILI/SOUP COOKOFF

January 19 turned out to be a very cold, snowy day, and church attendance was understandably low. But the Chili/Soup Cookoff took place anyway. We had eighteen pots to choose from! As always, there was one prize for the judges’ choice (they had to try a little of all 18 pots!), and a people’s choice, determined by donations placed in jars beside each pot. Beautifully engraved Blenko water pitchers were awarded to Lisa Kissel, peoples’ choice for her cauliflower soup, and to Duane Adkins (repeat winner) for his judges’ choice “Just Plain Chili.” The big winner was the Knight’s Great Hall at Cabell Midland High School. We raised $2,216 for their support. Thanks to all who worked hard on this wonderful project.

SOUPERBOWL TIME!

Never mind the Superbowl, we had a successful Souperbowl on Feb. 9. Youth were at every entrance holding their soup pots to accept donations. Also, on the Wednesday night before, they hosted a soup/sandwich dinner. Between these two activities, they were able to raise $5,508. For the past several years, they donated the Souperbowl funds to the Huntington City Mission, but this year was different. The week before, a church family lost their home and all their possessions to a house fire. Two teens in the family are active in Youth Ministries, and they felt a desire to help them.

ANNUAL CRITTER DINNER

The ABMM hosted this very well attended event again this year. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation to sample the unusual cuisine. The men served such meats as alligator, bison, deer, elk, frog legs, ox tails, pheasant, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, and wild hog, and fish such as catfish, salmon, trout and walleye. Of course, for the non-adventurous, there were hot dogs and WV steak (baloney). The men worked hard on this dinner, setting up big cookers under the awning. Thank you so much!

(New feature this year – a recently deceased racoon was moved from his spot in the road about a half mile from the church, and placed in a convenient spot on the church sidewalk. (This was not the same racoon we enjoyed, barbequed.)

Certificates were presented at the dinner for young hunters who had harvested deer this year: Cameron Kirby, Ella Childers, and Okie Childers. Also, the Big Buck award was presented to Jeremy Cooper, whose buck scored 143. He was awarded a custom-made hunting knife made in Lucasville, OH.

150th ANNIVERSARY RECOGNIZED

Southwest Area Minister Evan Arkell of the WV Baptist Convention wrote a very nice report of our anniversary celebration in the WV Baptist Newsletter, Feb.-Mar. issue. He recapped the day’s events and included a picture. Thanks so much, Evan.

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

 Recent flooding affected the homes of two of our church members, and some of our men were able to help them. The weather has really been something lately.

 Deacon Marty Beckett, who is also a leader in Youth Ministries, reported that their Bible study in 2024 entitled, “Invested,” had been very successful. This year, their field of study will be “Direction Determine Destination.” Sounds interesting.

 On that cold snowy morning Jan. 19, attendance was low, so the Willing Workers, Caldwell Class, and Middle Adult Class combined into one in the Willing Workers classroom. Teacher Kevin Elkins did a great job, and we enjoyed sharing with one another.

 The current issue of the WV Baptist Newsletter reports that the Sunny Day Activity Center at Camp Cowen is now fully funded! It will be dedicated on May 17th, and everyone is invited. This facility will provide classrooms and meeting space, and a place for sports activities on rainy days. If you have ever been a camper at Cowen, you know how restricted you are when it is rainy. In 2024, Camp Cowen had 1,710 campers, and there were 150 rededications and 97 salvations!

AN OLD ENGLISH PRAYER

Give us, Lord, a bit o’ sun,

A bit o’ work and a bit o’ fun;

Give us in all the struggle and sputter,

Our daily bread and a bit o’ butter.

Give us health, our keep to make,

An’ a bit to spare for others’ sake;

Give us, too, a bit of song

And a tale, and a book to help us along.

Give us Lord, a chance to be

Our goodly best for ourself and others,

Till all men learn to live as brothers.

MY NEIGHBOR’S BIBLE

I am my neighbor’s Bible,

He reads me when we meet,

Today he reads me in my home,

Tomorrow in the street.

He may be relative or friend,

Or slight acquaintance be.

He may not even know my name,

Yet he is reading me.

Dear Christian friends and brothers,

If we could only know

How faithfully the world records

Just what we say and do.

Oh, we would make our record plain

And labor hard to see

Our worldly neighbor won to Christ

While reading you and me.

January 2025 Newsletter

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 3:10).

God’s call can strip pride from the strongest men. Moses had lived in Pharaoh’s house, crossed the burning desert, and tended sheep when the Lord commissioned him to return to Egypt and lead the people out. He was stunned. He wasn’t trained as a priest and knew better than anyone how impossible it was to try and pry slaves from the hands of the Egyptians. He attempted to excuse himself, but God had chosen him. So, Moses humbled himself, received the commission, and marched back to Egypt.

The account would be more encouraging if Moses marched into the palace, demanded the release of God’s people, and Pharaoh let them go. We know that didn’t happen, and Moses suffered for the next 40 years. He may have still had friends among the Egyptians he grew up with. Witnessing their suffering and loss weighed heavy on his soul. His own people dragged their feet for fear of Pharaoh and accused Moses often. They murmured and rebelled against God and Moses. But God stood by him. He’ll do the same for us.

Christians are called to go and teach, baptize, disciple, and train believers to replicate the work of evangelism. Stepping into the arena of faith and practice to win the lost and recall backslidden believers can break your heart and your health. But God will not abandon you. There is too much at stake for us to dance around matters of salvation. Christ is the answer, but many have stopped asking the question. Heaven and hell are real. Eternity never ends. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We know the destiny of all who reject Christ! Demonstrate your neighborly love by boldly sharing the soul-saving, eternal life giving-gospel of Jesus Christ today!                     ~~Pastor Greg

MISSION PROJECTS

In December, we asked for funds for Lily’s Place, which opened in 2014 as the first Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Center in the USA. They provide care to newborns suffering from prenatal drug exposure. We were able to send them $585. Thanks!

Our January Mission Project is the Knight’s Great Hall at Cabell Midland High School, which provides food, toiletries and school supplies to teens in need. It is a confidential service administered by the school counselors, which includes our own Jenna McComas. A list of items which can be donated is on the foyer bulletin board. To give, mark KGH on the memo line of your check.

The ABWM Community Outreach Project for January is “undies” (briefs and socks) for women of all sizes at the Huntington City Mission. If you wish to donate, please place items in the basket in the front foyer.

 CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

On Dec. 15, “The Christmas County Spelling Bee” was one of the best plays ever. At least that’s what we have been told. All the children did an outstanding job. Especially one of their dads, who did his part the best! Even the judge was good and fair! We appreciate all the parents for bringing their kids to practice and then practicing with them at home. The children will remember all the different names of our wonderful Lord. Thank you to everyone who helped in the play.

Special treat for the kids was the next Sunday night. They enjoyed food and playing in our wonderful gym with the inflatables. Special thanks to dads who put them out and then put them up.

Our children collected quarters for the church 150th anniversary celebration. They were trying to get at least 150 quarters. They collected the whole month of December. They wanted to give the money to the Huntington City Mission for their children at Christmas. Our children collected a total of $150 in quarters!! This was taken to the City Mission on December 23rd for their children’s Christmas. Thank you, parents and grandparents and adults for helping the children reach their goal with so much more.  Pray for our children.

SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

On December 26, 2024, Beulah Ann was 150 years old! We have reported on the many events we enjoyed since June, but the big day was celebrated on Dec. 29th.

At 11:00, we gathered for morning worship. Our secretary, Debbie Sansom, had prepared special bulletins for the day, featuring the cover of our new directory, which depicts a crowd of people standing in front of our old white church building, and a crowd of people standing in front of our present building. A keepsake in itself.

A quartet of Erin Carter, Jeanne Lunsford, Tom McComas and Duane Adkins sang a wonderful meaningful song, “This is the Place,” accompanied by a moving video filled with pictures from past and present, created by Susan McComas.

Jo Ross presented her last “Historical Moment” talk, reading a “letter to the editor” written in 1881 by one of our founders Benjamin L. Perry. How poignant to hear his words today!

Led by Duane Adkins, the choir sang many songs from the past (still good now), written by Alfred Brumley, a prolific hymn writer, giving a little history about each one.

Rev. Evan Arkell, our WVBC Area Minister, then brought greetings from the WVBC and presented us with a certificate. He recounted many fond memories of this church, and noted that four people in 1874 said “yes” to God and created this special place.

Next, Gary and Debbie Higginbotham, representing the WV Baptist Historical Society, presented us with a certificate as well.

Ed Beaver, son of our beloved late Pastor Walker Beaver, had very much desired to attend, and represent Pastor Beaver and his wife Lois, but his health did not permit it, so he wrote a letter. At the last minute, he found out his son Jon would be in this area on Dec. 29! Jon did a wonderful job reading his dad’s letter and sharing some remembrances. He also was delighted to show his young son and his wife the plaque honoring Walker Beaver as our Pastor Emeritus.

This was followed by a video created by Susan McComas that recapped all of our celebrations which started in June. Good job, Susan.

Rev. Tracy Mills was our assistant pastor in 1999 and was in charge of the filling our Time Capsule. It was fitting that he got to open it! He said at that time we had just dedicated the Family Center, and were closing out one millennium and beginning a new one. Our members entrusted this time capsule to represent a snapshot of their hopes, prayers, memories and vision for the future. He said, “May we feel the weight of their faith and responsibility to carry it forward with integrity and purpose.”

We then began to fill the new Time Capsule, to be open 25 years from now. Tom McComas crafted a beautiful wooden box to hold our mementos.

Pastor Greg brought the Anniversary Sermon, entitled, “If He Tarries.” He used Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” The vision of our founders and our vision today is the same – to spread the Word to an unsaved community. We honor those who came before us, but it is time to move forward. People are not saved by buildings or programs. If He tarries, we plan to be still teaching and preaching the word of God.

After the sermon and invitation, we adjourned to enjoy a wonderful meal prepared by Adult Ministries. The tables were beautiful with oil lamps for decoration, and our new quilt, made by Karen Caldwell and our quilting groups, was hung for all to see. It is beautiful, featuring the signatures of our members and attendees. Our wonderful cake was made by Debbie Weston, featuring photos of our old white church, and our current church.

Many people enjoyed visiting our Historical Display room and just fellowshipping. We were so pleased to have many visitors and former members coming back for this special occasion.

Many thanks to all who pitched in to help, and especially to the Willie Rose Sunday School Class for letting us take over their class room. We promise to have it cleaned out soon.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING

Eleven people braved the cold weather to go caroling on Friday, Dec. 20. We visited and sang to nine shut-ins in the church community. While caroling to Ruby Young and her son David we also had the opportunity to meet and carol to Phil’s brother’s family and their pastor from out of state. The shut-ins enjoyed the time of fellowship and caroling. It is such a blessing every year to bring a little joy to them. After the caroling, we returned to the church for pizza and refreshments.                ~~Becky Childers

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

J Our Decorating Committee did a wonderful job for Christmas. Do you remember the big poinsettia tree that was above the baptistry in years past? Well, they got it out of the attic. Its’ framework no longer allows it to be hung, but they assembled it on the sanctuary floor near the piano, and it looked just fine. Add to that four large live poinsettias donated by Christie Scarberry, and the church looked beautiful. Thanks so much to the committee, that took a lot of work.

Children’s Ministries had a goal to collect 150 quarters for our 150th Anniversary Celebration. They collected over 580 quarters! They gave $150 to the Huntington City Mission children for Christmas! Thanks, children.

J Well, this is good news/bad news. Beulah Ann is known for NEVER cancelling church, but on the evening of Jan. 5, Howell’s Mill Road was officially closed due to snow and ice. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Pastor Greg aired the service anyway, from his home via Facebook, something that could not have been done only a few years ago. His wife Jeanne was his audio/visual staff, and did a fine job. We are so grateful for our Pastor and his good wife.

J Another good news/bad news. On Sunday, Dec. 15, a semi-truck wrecked and turned over on its side on I 64 on the bridge that crosses over Howell’s Mill Road. It was dangerously close to slipping off the bridge, so Howell’s Mill Road was closed. This meant many people could not get to church, and found out too late to detour. The good news is that no one was hurt, and we had a few visitors from this side of the bridge that could not make it to their own church.

The Hurricane Civic Chorus thrilled us with their wonderful harmony on Dec. 17, when they presented “Sing We Now of Christmas.” Beulah Anners taking part were Judy Lawson, John Rimmer, and Connie Chapman. Others we know were Robert Jackson, Billy Gillispie, and Debbie Finley.

J Our own sanctuary choir presented a splendid program on Dec. 12, under the direction of Duane Adkins. Highlights were “Hope Has Hands,” accompanied by a video complied by Susan McComas, and the quartet singing of “O Holy Night.” Check it out of Facebook or You Tube.

J Dinners and dinners! The Faithful Servants Sunday School Class celebrated Christmas with a dinner on Dec. 21 in the Family Center, and the Willing Workers SS Class met at Fratelli’s in Barboursville on Dec. 21. Yum! Each class had a good turnout.

J Christmas fell on Wednesday night, so what a fitting time to enjoy our annual Fireside Christmas. We enjoyed carols and remembrances we love so much.

1999 TIME CAPSULE OPENED

Just what was in that mysterious box which was filled at our 125th Anniversary celebration? We will attempt to list many of them: The Evangels record, “The Church Triumphant;” a big envelope from the “Quiz Team;” Four VHS tapes (we have to find a way to view them); a box from the Senior Christian Fellowship with a recipe book and a quilt block and other items; an ABWM Love Gift container with some coins in it; a KC and the Gloworms CD (we don’t know why); a cassette tape of Trials of Faith (Lloyd Morrison’s group); the silver bell used to call Sunday School to order from years ago; a photo album (untitled); a photo album of the Caldwell Class; a packet of every bulletin from 1999 (saved by Tracy Mills); the Church History book written by Mildred Caldwell; a Sunday School Quarterly; the position paper written by Tracy Mills for his 1999 ordination; a log of the Children’s Dept. prayer requests throughout 1999; an Anniversary Ribbon (thanks to Glen Dailey for supplying these to us for years); a big white button with a blue W on it (Pastor Paul had us use these to remember to fast on Wednesdays); an ABWM White Cross roller bandage; Pastor Paul’s business card for 2000; many letters – one with greetings from David Peyton in Zambia, Africa, one from Claude Sipple, one to Pastor Paul from the 6th Judicial Circuit Court, written by Judge David Pancake, commending the church and Pastor Paul, his friend, and one from the 4th & 5th grade class; the program from the dedication of the Family Center; a photo album of the nursery; the Senior Ladies class roll and photo; a paper signed by all our visitors from Japan from the Shoshin Girls School; a very nice album of all the highlights of 1999 created by the Anniversary Committee; lots of other wonderful things!
