October 2022 Newsletter

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

Psalm 85:6 – Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Revival is almost here! Pastor and Evangelist Brother Willie May will hold revival from Sunday morning, October 23rd, through Friday evening, October 28th. We invite you to attend! We encourage you to attend and let the Holy Spirit work in you to revive the flame of faith and restore your joy in the Lord Jesus Christ. Revival is vital to the growth and development of individual believers who make up the universal and local Church.

Many churches don’t have revivals nowadays. There are multiple reasons given: not needed, can’t fit into the schedule, not worthwhile, etc. In days past, a revival was a time when souls found salvation and Churches were revitalized and refocused to carry out the Great Commission. What has changed? I believe we’ve forgotten who needs revival. It isn’t the church building that needs reviving. It’s the members, born-again believers. Our daily interaction with the world can dim our lampshade, dull our witness, and cause us to be diminished vessels for the Lord’s work.

A Spirit-filled, Spirit-led revival is precisely what the groaning Church in America needs. We are holding Revival at Beulah Ann. In the days and weeks before our evangelist arrives, we are preparing for it. We need believers to pray for a Holy Spirit revival. We urge you to pray for church members to show up and experience revival so the Church, as a whole, can thrive! Pray that God will pour out his blessings. Maybe you haven’t been to Church in years. Come back now! Perhaps you’ve never met the new pastor. Introduce yourself at the next service. What if you’ve never been to Church? I encourage you to come and experience Jesus Christ. God demonstrated His love for you and me on the cross, His love letter to us signed in the precious blood of Jesus.    ~~Pastor Greg

MISSION PROJECTS

In September and now in October, we are collecting funds for shipping costs for Samaritan’s Purse Love in a Shoebox, also known as Operation Christmas Child. The shipping charge to send each shoebox has risen to $10, which includes trucking our boxes to North Carolina, then trucking them to airports, then flying them around the world. Although some individuals and classes provide shipping funds for their boxes, some are not able to, but we have always been able to cover all our boxes. To give, write “Shoebox” on the memo line of your check.

In November, we will need funds for the Christmas Basket project.

ABWM COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT for September was collecting clean, gently used winter coats and sweaters for the Huntington City Mission. We gathered 38 coats, several of them donated from the WOWS rummage sale. Thanks everyone!

Our project for October is collecting body wash and wipes for the Huntington Hospice House. If you have some to donate, please place them in the laundry basket in the front foyer. Thanks!

GIDEON SPEAKER

Brandon Stewart visited on Sept. 18, and shared a story with us concerning a man in Ohio who lost his job, became an alcoholic, lost everything and found himself living in the streets. Then he found a Gideon Bible from a hotel and it saved his soul and his life!

The Gideons was started by a group of businessmen who were staying at a hotel in Montana in 1899, and as they got acquainted, they found they had much in common as Christian men. They felt it would be good to have Bibles available to all in the hotel. Now Gideons place Bibles and New Testaments in hotels, motels, hospitals, and give them to school children. They serve in more than 200 countries and 109 languages.

He told of a group who were trying to take Testaments to a school in the Philippines, but they could not find it. They saw a different school, and decided just to stop and give them out there. The principal had tears in her eyes as she said she had been praying for this, and needed them for a values class they taught.

He said the Gideons need our prayers, they need more members, and they need our finances. The Bibles they distribute cost $5 each, and the Testaments are $1.56. A Bible placed in a hotel will last about six years and could reach as many as 2,000 people.

He encouraged us to use the card rack we have in the foyer, which enables you to give Bibles in honor or in memorial.

Our offering was $1,434.11, which will buy 286 Bibles or 919 New Testaments.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

JOHN 17: – “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”
Jesus came to glorify God. Every human has that purpose in common, including Christ, being born of a woman. And he fulfilled it. Anyone who reads the Scriptures without bias will quickly see that everything Jesus did glorified God. From healing miracles to feeding thousands, Jesus magnified the Father. At this point in the Gospel of John, Jesus is nearing the cross. His active ministry is

complete.  He is prepared to give himself a ransom for many.
What sacrifices are we prepared to offer in response to the eternal salvation Jesus purchased by his shed blood? For example, are we willing to sacrifice our time to attend services, our treasure to fund church operations and ministries, and our talents to worship and praise Him? Have we chosen one over the others? If so, we are out of balance. Proper balance is essential in life and faith. The Apostle Paul was gung-ho to preach the gospel but required a thorn in the flesh to keep him humble and focused on God’s sufficient grace. Three services a week can seem daunting if we simply warm the pew. Likewise, giving our hard-earned money to support financial needs can be stressful if we don’t wholeheartedly support the church’s ministries. And failing to offer our talents to glorify God at all times makes worship all about us when it is now and ever shall be all about Jesus.
Beulah Ann is thriving because we seek to honor and glorify God in the name of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is not a journey of one or a few. Our church needs every member engaged for the glory of God. Is your faith life out of balance? Examine yourself, repent and rebalance today. We love you and need you!                                                           ~~Pastor Greg

CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF:

LARRY CAREY, 77, of Huntington, whose funeral was Sept. 3. He was the husband of Barbara Carey, and stepfather of Brian (Leigh) Bellomy.

MARGARET KISH FADLEVICH, 97, of Ona, whose funeral was Sept. 3. She was a friend to many in our church wo were her neighbors on Sunny Drive.

MAE “POOCH” ALDENE BLACK INSCOE, 83, of Huntington, whose funeral was Sept. 1. She was a friend to several in our church.

RICHARD JACKSON, 90, of Wheelersburg, OH, passed away Sept. 6. He was the brother of Rosemary Walker.

DONALD KEITH SHEPPARD, 70, of Milton, passed away Sept. 12. He was a relative of JoAnn Jordan and others in the church.

SCOTT SIMMS, 65, of Ona, passed away Aug. 18. He served as the Sheriff of Mason County for eight years. He was the father of Jennifer (Billy) Rose, and neighbor to several church members on Rimmer Lane.

WILLIAM “BILL” TOPPING, 59, of Huntington, passed away Sept. 1. Among his survivors are his wife, Mary Morrison Topping, and siblings Jamie Clagg, Christy Holley and Dee Sargent.

MELVIN PHILIP YOUNG, 84, of Milton, whose funeral was Aug. 29. He is survived by his loving wife Ruby, step-son David Cantrell, and many friends in our church. He was a faithful member of this church and will be missed.

MISSION PROJECTS

In August, we collected for the Salvation Army, who are always on the front lines to help people in need in various situations. We contributed $460 to this wonderful organization.

In September and October, we are turning our attention to Samaritan’s Purse Love in a Shoebox, also known as Operation Christmas Child.

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

 On Sunday, Sept. 11, Pastor Greg asked everyone in the congregation under the age of 21 to stand. From my vantage point, there were 20-25 young people standing (not counting the children who were downstairs). What a wonderful sight! But his point was that these young people have no personal memory of the events of 9-11-01. We must never forget.

Blessings sang for us again on August 21 and Sept. 11. They always chose the right songs and really are a blessing!

THANKS FROM OUR PARTNERS

Beulah Ann supports many missions far and wide, both from our budget and designated offerings. And they are all faithful to express their thanks. Here is just a sample of this month’s letters:

From Evangelistic Outreach Ministries, Calvin Ray Evans writes, “Dear Friends at Beulah Ann, I just wanted to share will all of you the deep appreciation this ministry has for your support. It means so much to know your church is praying for us. Thank you so much for your willingness to stand with us to spread the

Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world filled with lost souls!”

Mitch Webb, the Executive Director of the Huntington City Mission, writes, “Thank you for your recent gift. Your support is deeply appreciated. Your generosity makes a difference and gives hope to those who experience homelessness.”

Unfolding Word President David Reeves writes, “We are profoundly grateful for your continued support of Church-Centric Bible Translation.” We support the Russ and Jan Perry who have dedicated their lives to this ministry.

Dr. Jeffrey Haggray writes in behalf of the American Baptist Home Mission Societies, “Thank you for your generous gift. Your financial support is making a transformational difference across the United States and Puerto Rico.

PRAYER IS SIMPLE

Prayer is so simple.
It is like quietly opening a door,
And slipping into the very presence of God;
There in the stillness to listen to His voice –
Perhaps to petition,
Or only to listen,
It matters not.
Just to be there
In His presence
Is prayer.

SEPTEMBER

The goldenrod is yellow,
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curing in the sun;
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun
The sedges flaunt their harvest,
In every meadow and nook;
And asters by the brookside
Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather,
And autumn’s best of cheer.

YOUTH MINISTRIES

Four teens and three adults spent a few hours volunteering at the Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The foodbank serves seventeen counties in WV, OH, and KY. They distribute over 10,000 boxes of food to food pantries, back packs and area distribution points throughout the three states.

We delivered 79 pounds of food to them, which will feed over sixty families. Our job was to fill bags with beef to be distributed. We filled 830 bags, each containing three pounds of beef that will be distributed with other foods this week that will total 2,490 pounds of beef! The foodbank purchases food in bulk and relies on volunteers, grants and donations.  For every $1 they receive, they can feed 9 people.

The youth will be returning but if anyone would like to volunteer or contribute contract them directly or see me and I can give you information.                   ~~Mitzi Beckett

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS
What a blessing the Crazy Tie Guy and his family were on August 20th. They truly are a missionary family. They spread God’s love with their talent for juggling. They amazed us that night with juggling and unicycling. They came from Tullahoma, Tennessee to spend the evening with us. They shared the Love of God with the illustration of how beautiful Heaven will be. The kids have added them to our prayer list downstairs and they want them to come back again.

Back to School Sunday August 21st was a big turnout. Kids had special treats and take-home book bags filled with school supplies. Pray for our kids this year especially.

Jesus Kids are back practicing every Sunday night at 6:30 pm for 1st – 5th graders. We already have eight that have signed up. More are welcome to join. They have a concert schedule already.

We had the 1st Annual Bible Trivia game God’s Kids versus the Adults in church on Sunday night, Sept. 11. Our trophies looked so nice and they were made by Tri-State Trophies in Barboursville. Well, the winner was God’s Kids!!! They picked the name for their team.

Bible TriviaQuiz Night

Kids won the first-place trophy and Pastor Greg got a “participation” trophy for asking the questions!

ADULT MINISTRIES HAS FUN TOO!

On September 10th we set up the big screen in the gym and got to watch the Herd take down the #8 Notre Dame!!!!  I hope you can imagine the excitement that went through the Family Center when the winning touchdown went across the line!!! We ate some delicious concession stand food, hot dogs, chicken tenders, nachos and cheese, tater tots, fries, and ice cream!!!  We even whipped up a few funnel cakes!!!!

It is good that we have the opportunity to come together to watch a sport and team that they love in a place with friends and family that they love. We might just have to make this a regular event!!!!

Thank you to everyone who came out and watched the game and ate some food!!!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

2 Thessalonians 2:11

Why would God send delusion to people he sent Christ to save? Verse 10 answers. “… because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” The gospel goes forth. God’s son, born in the flesh, sinless, gave His life and shed His blood to redeem the lost who will come to Him in faith, believing. The resurrection verifies the gospel’s truth, but the time is fast approaching when the opportunity to be saved will be gone.

Paul writes in these passages of a time when the antichrist will arise. He’ll be the demonic agent of Satan, counterfeiting the apostles’ works and leading untold millions to hell through lies and deceit. But sadly, many will go willingly because of the temporary pleasures they experience without regard for their eternal salvation. Could this time be upon us? It’s possible. Mind-altering madness is accessible through physical pleasure, pharmaceutical dosage, and other forms of manipulation.

Furthermore, recent technological innovation allows one to escape the cares of this world through an immersive experience in a virtual world. The devil uses deception and distraction from reality to keep you from what matters most. There is a future after physical death, and if you fail to make peace with God in this life, you’ll have no peace at all in the afterlife. Scripture says, “… behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

We pray that you open your mind and heart to the gospel truth. Just as there is physical and temporal life, there is spiritual and eternal life. Reject Christ and suffer hell and damnation. Repent, believe, and live in peace with God eternally through our Lord Christ Jesus.                      ~~Pastor Greg

GUYANDOTTE BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

DAY CAMP 2022

Theme: Water Works – “Riding the Waves of God’s Love”

The waves of God’s Love were in abundance this year at Day Camp, July 11-15. It is amazing to be a part of such a wonderful group of volunteers. The excitement of the Campers was a title wave. After two years of NO Day Camp due to the Covid-19 they were more than happy to be back at camp. For twenty-three years it has been such a blessing. To see former campers bringing their children to Day Camp. WOW. We have Bible lessons, Music, Crafts and other activities. We could not have Day Camp every year if not for the financial and physical support of our Association churches. A BIG thank you to Good Hope Baptist, Milton Baptist, New Baptist, Twenty-Sixth Street and Union Baptist, and Camp Pastors Tim Arthur and Chad Clark.

Praising God for His Love and many Blessings.

YOUTH MINISTRIES

On the Fifth Sunday of July, we heard from some campers who spent a week at Camp Cowen this summer. Ava Litteral enjoyed the carnival themed fun and games and was in a “great cabin.” Rebecca Hunt said the theme was presented as a TV show “Upside Down Kingdom.” Hannah Wallace also enjoyed camp, and her brother Beckett made a lot of friends at his first time at camp. He plans to go back again. Reese Hunt and Rachel Hunt also went to camp.

Also, Levi, Isaac and Jeremiah, the sons of Marc and Angie Chapman got to attend Camp Caleb in Louisa, KY. Levi said it rained every day but they had good fellowship. The theme was “To Know God.” They learned more about how to read the Bible and pray. Isaac said he enjoyed the worship, and singing. He said you can always sing for God.

On Sept. 10 the Youth will leave the church at 8 am to travel to Facing Hunger Foodbank. They will spend the morning packing food boxes to be distributed at drop off points throughout the region.                                  ~~ Mitzi Beckett

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

What a summer the kids have had. But now everyone is coming home to get ready for school this month. Parents are back with their children coming to church. What a blessing that is to see Mom and Dad bringing their family to God’s house!

On August 20th The Crazy Tie Guy and family will be with us from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. What a Blessing and such a talented family. Nathan Dorrell is a child evangelist who uses his juggling/circus talent to tell the message of Christ. The whole family is amazing. More to tell you about next newsletter.

Back to School party is Sunday, August 21st at 11 am and 6:30 pm – Please pray for our kids as they go back to school. Chunky has a storage room downstairs with items that have been purchased by several people for any child who needs school items. Thank you church for your generosity.

Our prayer buddy ministry appreciates those who have signed up to pray for our children. If you do not have one and would like one see Boo. Kids talk about their prayer buddies and love to see them in church. Also, they love having their pictures made with their prayer buddy. So, see Boo for a picture!

Jesus Kids will be back practicing on August 28th at 6:30 pm for 1st – 5th graders. We already have a singing schedule. Jesus Kids are a blessing.

Our children are learning three sets of Bible Questions. Several have already memorized all three sets. We are so proud of them. So, we have challenged the adult church to a Bible Quiz Bowl Sunday, September 11 at 7 pm. You will be amazed at all the kids have learned.

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

 Pastor Greg and his family took a well- deserved vacation at the end of August, and the pulpit was well taken care of by Rev. Chelsie Gibson and Rev. George Leese.

Robert Jackson did a wonderful job of singing for us Sunday morning, July 17. “We are Standing on Holy Ground” and “Bow the Knee” are both impactful songs. He also shared with us how he is related to church members from our early history, most notably, J. C. Petit.

 Our Fifth Sunday Night singers were our own “Blessings” and they are appropriately named. Their membership changes from time to time, but on this night Bethany Beckett, Carrie Hunt, Angie Chapman, Jennifer Chapman, Erin Carter and Cassie Maynor made up the group. What a blessing they are! And afterwards, Youth Ministries served everyone ice cream in the Family Center. A great night!

Sincere Revival presented special music Sunday night, August 7. The group consists of Randy Shaffer, Dan and Debbie Moore, and Greg Tingler. They are all very talented and the presence of the Spirit was evident.

CHURCH WEBSITE – NEW!

Pastor Greg has spent quite a few hours developing our new website, which looks great and is easy to use. It is still under development, so watch for even more improvements. Our new address is www.beulahann1874.org. You can check for the latest announcements, and if you want to book the church facilities for an event, you can easily check the church calendar before you call the church office to book. Don’t forget the bookmark the page!

WVBC CONVENTION DELEGATES

The 157th Annual Meeting of our West Virginia Baptist Convention will be at Summersville Baptist Church on October 20 & 21, with the theme, “Intentionally Engaging Communities for Christ.” As always, there will be excellent speakers, much to learn, and great fellowship. It is encouraging to meet and worship with fellow Baptist from all over the state.

Beulah Ann’s delegation is Pastor Greg Lunsford, Sunday School Superintendent Tom McComas, and elected delegates Jim & Jo Ross, and Vera Miller, and alternates are Jeanne Lunsford and Patty Morrison.

If you are interested in taking this lovely fall trip, please see Jo Ross for more information.

ENDURING LOVE is a ministry that focuses on church planting and discipleship across the Middle East and North Africa. American Baptists support 29 missionaries across seven countries. In June, Todd McClure, WVBC Minister of Missions, Finance and Communications, traveled to Lebanon with Enduring Love, on a two-week mission trip. On June 5th, they witnessed the baptisms of six new believers, all from Druze and Muslim backgrounds. This brought their total baptisms to 55 over the past year. They then traveled to Sudan, which is less than .5% evangelical. They met with several Darfuri believers, who came to Christ while in refugee camps. Enduring Love supports their church planting efforts. Then in Egypt, they visited a discipleship school established by Enduring Love. Todd reports that it was incredible to see first-hand how God is at work across these predominately Muslim areas. “There is a great spiritual awakening and people are coming to Christ in record numbers.”

I FORGOT TO PRAY

I got up early this morning
It was time to start the day,
I had so very much to do,
I didn’t take time to pray.
Troubles came tumbling on me,
Heavier became my tasks,
I wondered why God didn’t help me,
He said, “Child, you didn’t ask.”
I tried to see truth and beauty,
The day stayed dark and bleak,
I wondered why God didn’t show me,
He said, “Child, you didn’t seek.”
I tried to enter God’s presence,
I used all the keys to the lock,
God tenderly, lovingly answered,
“My child, you didn’t knock.”
I got up early the next morning,
I made ready to start the day,
I had so very much to do, but –
I took the time to pray.

A SAMPLE FROM PASTOR GREG’S BLOG POSTS

Humble pie: best eaten at home.

When it comes to fine dining, crow is rarely on the menu. Nor is humble pie the dessert of choice. No one likes to be “put in their place.” Yet, often, we set ourselves up for just such a possibility. How so?

As Jesus notes, when we place ourselves in the best positions, we become targets for those who genuinely have the right to them. But unfortunately, we may also back our host into the awkward position of asking us to “step down.”

How highly do you think of yourself?

Scripture teaches that God does not respect persons. The rich, powerful, and influential are no less in danger of hellfire than the poor, powerless, and inconsequential. When one has a healthy understanding of his worth in Christ, humbling himself becomes an extension of that relationship. Furthermore, in Christ, our identity is in Him, not in some worldly definition. Therefore, we can rest in Christ and not worry about how the world esteems us.

Jesus, “God with us,” not only taught humility, but He also demonstrated it repeatedly. In His first incarnation, he was born into a poor family, birthed in a stable, and laid in a feed trough. Later, in Gethsemane, He restrained the legions of angels (Matt.26:53), ready to come to his defense. Finally, on the cross, He prays for His executioners (Luke 23:34) and “gives his life a ransom for many” (Matt. 20:28).

If anyone ever deserved the upper room, it was Jesus. Instead, he chose humility and obedience to the Father.

The Apostle Paul counseled “… to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think;…” Romans 12:3. Are we guilty of overestimating our importance or influence? I have been. If you’re honest, you probably have also. An inflated ego is frequently the offspring of pride and arrogance. There’s no place for pride and arrogance in the body of Christ.
