MISSION PROJECTS
In November, people gave generously to fund our Christmas Basket project. Funds were needed to buy fruit and other supplies to complete the baskets, and we gave $1,891. We help those in need, and honor those aged 80 and over, widows and widowers, those with serious health concerns, and those in nursing home care. We made about 85 baskets this year. Thanks to all who gave and the wonderful crew that showed up to deliver all those baskets! Merry Christmas to all!
ABWM CommunityOutreach Project
In November, we asked for individually wrapped snacks for the Veteran’s home in Barboursville. You gave a great big basket full. Thanks so much, and thanks to Walt and Shirley Frye for making the delivery.
“TWAS THAT NIGHT BEFORE
‘Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
“Cept dad and his spouse.
Their faces were haggard,
All wrinkled with care.
They looked at each other
And sighed in despair.
Could they both be enjoying
The presents they got?
From the look on their faces
We knew they were not.
It was simple to us
What was causing their ills.
They were figuring out
How to pay all those bills.
This is the day the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS
The last Sunday of November the Children’s Ministry awards were given out for kids saying their Bible verses for October and November. We also played Bible Hero trivia with the adults. Thank you, Pastor Greg for always leading that and letting the adults answer a few questions. Of course, the kids always win!
December has been a busy month for the kids. The Jesus kids had their Christmas party outing the first of the month. They deserve it singing their hearts out at the nursing home. We cannot forget our elderly at Christmas so the 2nd Sunday of the month they visited Paramount Assisted Living and took them calendars and little gifts. That evening the whole Children’s Ministry put on the “Wanna Be a Star” Christmas program. The backdrop of stars was made by the kids. We had ages from three months old to 5th graders in the program. They all did outstanding and the true meaning of Christmas was told. The Star of Christmas is Baby Jesus. Thomas Drew Carter was our own Baby for the program.
Thank you, parents, for working with your kids and bringing them to church. We love you. ~~Children’s Ministry Team
Editor’s note: At Wednesday Prayer Meeting after the children’s play, many testimonies mentioned the baby in the manger, flailing his arms and legs the whole time. It brought tears to many eyes as he really made the birth of Jesus more real in our minds. Thanks, little “TD” Carter.
BAMBY
Several adults treated Youth Ministries to a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 19. Thanks so much.
Youth Ministries continue to volunteer at Facing Hunger Foodbank on a monthly basis. This month, on Dec. 9, Ed Braley joined us and helped us pack 288 boxes! We have received the schedule for the first part of 2024 and will be looking at dates to volunteer in 2024.

WHILE CHILDREN SING
While children sing and carols play
The story of Nativity Day,
While shining wreaths and jeweled lights
Are sparkling through the frosted nights,
Eternal hope for peace again
Awakens in the hearts of men
While children sing and carols play,
Faith leads the world to Christmas Day

CALENDAR
**Sun., Dec. 17, 11 am – Youth Ministries Stick Drama, “Mary Did You Know?”
My church made a Christian movie called “ICan.” It is now available for purchase and streaming. It is currently the #1 best seller for Faith category and #5 new release on Amazon. It would mean the world to our team if you supported the project and bought a DVD and/or streamed the film! I think you will enjoy this incredible true story! Purchase options here:
J The Decorating Committee is to be commended for the fall decorations and now the Christmas decorations in the sanctuary! Beautiful job as usual.
J When a new better and faster wi-fi service became available in our area, and we signed on! Thanks to John Hagley for working diligently on this conversion. We now have fast and reliable service all over the church building, including the Beaver Building. John has brought us up-to-date in a great way.
J Our annual Church Christmas Dinner was Saturday, Dec. 2. Sunday School Classes provided ham and turkey, and everybody brought side dishes and those delicious desserts! Rianna Kingery volunteered to decorate, and it was beautiful. Mr. & Mrs. Claus were there to greet the children and hear their wishes. It was a lovely, well-attended fellowship. Many thanks to the worker bees who set up tables, worked in the kitchen, and cleaned up afterward. We see you, and you don’t get enough recognition. Merry Christmas!
J Two of our members, John Rimmer and Judy Lawson, sang in the Christmas program presented by the HurricaneCivic Chorus on Dec. 12.Several of our members also traveled to hear them at Forest Burdette Methodist Church in Hurricane. Other familiar faces in the chorus were Robert Jackson, Bill and Miriam Gillispie, and Debbie Finley. It was all wonderful, but the best had to be the singing of the Hallelujah Chorus! Amazing!
J Children’s Ministries surprised Sharon Hayes on Sunday morning, Dec. 10, with many gifts for her 81st birthday. Sharon has worked with the children for about 57 years!
LADIES BIBLE STUDY
The Ladies Bible study has completed a 6-week study “In the Footsteps of the Savior,” by Max Lucado. We had good attendance, great food, and fellowship as we studied each Monday night. The Ladies Bible Study group will continue to meet once a month until our next Bible Study in spring. The ladies had a Christmas party, attended by many ladies of the church. We had a variety of Mexican dishes along with wonderful desserts. Debbie Dillon led the ladies in two games, the White Elephant gift exchange was played with much excitement and laughter and success. Everyone went home with a different “White Elephant” gift. Thank you to all the ladies who were able to come and engage in Christian fellowship with all our Sisters in Christ. We will be meeting in January, 3rd Monday of the month at 5:30 pm. All ladies are welcome to come and join us. ~~Connie Chapman.
GIDEON’S INTERNATIONAL VISIT
Jerry Lake joined us on Sunday, Nov. 26, and shared news from the Gideons. The first Bible placed by the Gideons was in 1908 in the Superior Hotel in Montana. Now they place Bibles or Testaments in “all the traffic lanes of life” in 199 countries in 109 languages. The Gideons auxiliary, made up of the wives of Gideons, place Bibles in doctor and dentist offices.
Scripture placement had been growing every year. In 2019, 82 million Bibles were distributed. Then Covid-19 hit. In 2020, it was 65 million, and in 2021, 30 million. In 2022, this trend was reversed to 45 million, and this year, as of May 30, 56 million have been disbursed! From 1908 to now, the total is 2.6 billion!
To be a Gideon, you must be a member of an evangelical Protestant church and be recommended by your pastor.
Jerry told us how to get the Gideon Bible app on your phone, just go to your app store, it is free, and in many languages. This app was designed by a university student who was saved after receiving his green New Testament!
This year, in addition to hotels, motels, hospitals, doctor and dentist offices, and schools and universities, armed services, VA, and more, they have expanded to VBS and church camps.
We gave a love offering in support of the Gideons’ work of $1,437, which could supply about 289 Bibles!
Mr. Lake sent this note: Dear Pastor Lunsford and Church Family, Thank you so much for your hospitality and warm welcome for The Gideons on Nov. 26. Your generous offering will be used to purchase and place many Bibles throughout the world! May God richly bless you for your kindness! (In turn, he personally purchased and donated five Bibles in honor of Beulah Ann.)
Dear readers: I would like to apologize for appearance of this version of the church letter. Each month, when I copy and paste the letter from Word to e-mail, the formatting goes a little crazy. Bold and not bold exchanges places, as does italics and non-italics, and the font sizes exchange places, etc. I try to clean it up a little but it is difficult. The Word documents are attached if you would like to print it out for easier reading. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the news from the church. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Editor, Jo Ross

The MISSION PROJECT for November is Christmas Baskets. We need funds to buy supplies to help those in need, as well as honor those in our church and community who are widowed, elderly, have serious health conditions, or are in assisted living. We need to purchase a few grocery store gift cards and lots of fruit. We also need folks to bring individually wrapped Christmas cakes, cookies, and candies. (There is a basket in the foyer.) We will also need help with the assembly and distribution of the baskets. Thanks!
