FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: ECCL 3:1

General Grant was the President, the first American zoo opened, Joseph Glidden patented barbed wire, and on December 26, 1874, the Beulah Ann Missionary Baptist Church was born. Like the nation, she has experienced trials over the years. However, it continues to be a lighthouse shining the gospel of salvation by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Lord willing, we will celebrate our 150th birthday at the close of the year. Over the next six months, we invite you to celebrate with us as we honor the Lord and those who laid our local assembly’s foundation, literally and spiritually.

This season of celebration reminds us that God is faithful, and His Word will not return empty. It will accomplish His purpose. Jesus told his closest disciples that He would build His Church and the “gates of hell” would not prevail against it. We’ve had our struggles, especially in those rugged days before roads, cars, electricity, and indoor plumbing, but God has provided every resource necessary to be the Church He called us to be. We’re not there yet, but we’re standing firm, preaching the Word, and inviting the lost to Jesus Christ.

Looking back stirs our memories, and I pray it brings a wide smile to your face and warm feelings to your heart. But we can’t overlook the present. Nor can we fail to prepare for the future. Beulah Ann is not an accident of faith. She is a prayerfully planted, tenderly loved, faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. We need you. The body works best when every member works together. Jesus will return, but until He does, we will be about His business. Will you walk with us in faith and practice? It’s time to celebrate! Praise the Lord for 150 years of service!                                  ~~Pastor Greg

MISSION PROJECTS

For May, our Mission Project was Camp Cowen. We love to help send our young people to camp. The fee for one week is now $260. We hope many go this summer. We raised $1,360 for this fund.

Lily’s Place is our June Mission Project. It is a Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Center in Huntington, where they care for newborns suffering from prenatal drug exposure. To give, write LP on the memo line of your check.

The ABWM Community Outreach Project for May was new sweatpants and tops, and disposable undies for both men and women, for the residents of Cabell Health Care in Culloden. Unfortunately, many patients there don’t have family that can or will supply them with their needs. We were able to take them 4 sweat pants, three shirts, and four packages of disposable undies. They appreciated this donation very much.

In June, the ABWM’s Community Outreach Project is collecting newborn socks, paper towels, and reuseable shoppingbags for Lily’s Place. The shopping bags are for care packages that are sent home with parents when the babies are ready to be released (with support and counseling for the parents). Please place items in the basket in the front foyer.

Pastor Greg, I hope you, your family and the church are well. After reading the latest Beulah Ann Newsletter and seeing the current Mission Project, we are sending a donation. Beulah Ann and Camp Cowen have made such positive impact on our family. While attending Beulah Ann, our children attended Camp Cowen. Camp Cowen “where people meet Jesus” should truly be “where people meet and establish a daily walk with Jesus.” My children fell in love with Jesus and Camp Cowen. Both worked a couple of summers at Camp Cowen to help with camps while in college. Both children were engaged to their spouses at Camp Cowen. And both currently attend Church with their family. Toni and I were blessed with the Willing Workers Retreat at Camp Cowen, where we too fell in love with Jesus and Camp Cowen. What a great Mission that continues to bless those youth at Beulah Ann.          Love and blessings,

                                       Jeff & Toni Madden

JAMES O’LYNN, 88, of Barboursville, whose funeral was June 4. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marcella. He faithfully attended our church until Covid came along. His great singing and testimonies continue to be missed.

 NEW MEMBERS

Two daughters of Daniel and Brittany Cook, Ariana Cook, age 7 and Joanna Cook, age 8 were baptized on Sunday morning, May 15.

Pat Grass has three brothers, and two of them visited her for a week. One of them, Dennis Barker from Florida, had recently been saved, and wanted to be baptized! So, on Sunday morning, June 9, Dennis was baptized. It was a glorious morning.

Then at the evening service, Abilene Chapman, 9-year-old daughter of Jared and Holly Chapman, granddaughter of Brent and Deby Chapman, great-granddaughter of Richard and Peggy Chapman, was also baptized. She had been saved at VBS last week. What a wonderful day!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NEWS

What a wonderful “Twist and Turns” Vacation Bible School we had – June 2nd – 6th. The members of Beulah Ann volunteered their 5 days to help us out and oh how we appreciated it! Kids came, we ate, we played, we sang songs, we made crafts and especially learned about Jesus. The dinners the Willing Workers, Faithful Servants and Mary and Joseph classes served were so good. Thank you. The Bible story room was decorated great. The boat that Brenda Lawson and Serena Hibner built inside that room was amazing. Kids will never forget the stories about Peter walking on water, catching fish and Jesus fixing them breakfast on the shore. Thank you, Bible Teachers. Thank you, Brent and Debbie Chapman for making the homemade crafts for the kids to decorate. The Mission Project for Vacation Bible School was Ona Elementary Fall Pantry. Lots of Mac & Cheese, peanut butter, spaghetti o’s, soup and cans of fruit were brought in for the kids in the Ona community. Thanks parents! We want to thank everyone for your time that week. God Bless you. We mentioned all the names in our Vacation Bible School program and the kids said THANK YOU on Sunday night June 9th to all of them. We want to thank the Napiers for the use of their yard again. Adults and kids had a fun time. But the most important thing that happened was a nine-year-old girl accepted Jesus as her Saviour and was baptized on Sunday June 9th. Praise the Lord!     ~~Children’s Ministry Team – Kara, Sharon, Casey, Chunky & Boo

BAMBY VBS

This year’s theme was INVESTED. Our average attendance was 15 and we had a FANTASTIC week. The lessons, taught by our youth team were Invested in Family, Invested in Prayer, Invested in Church, Invested in Service and Invested in Christ.

We had several projects during the week including making blankets, doing Blessing Bags for the Children in Hoops Children’s Hospital and Child Advocacy Center, and will be finishing pencil pouches for shoeboxes. Our project to show Invested in Church included power washing the picnic shelter and cleaning the tables, painting the fire pit and vacuuming the van.

Dinner was provided nightly and we’d like to thank Karen Caldwell for her help preparing the meals, Leigh Bellomy for providing desserts and the Mary and Joseph Class for their donation to help with food purchase.

Games were always fun and sometimes messy. The kids especially enjoyed Wednesday night. It had rained and was muddy so after the lesson we loaded up the teens for a scavenger hunt that ended at DQ.          ~~Mitzi Beckett

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE

On May 19, at 11 am, our graduates in their caps and gowns marched in to Pomp and Circumstance, and took their place on the front row. Youth Ministries leaders Marty Beckett, Sammy Litteral, Jeremey and Carrie Hunt and Mitzi Beckett received them. Marty brought a devotion from Prov. 14:2 “He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him,” and talked about making right choices. Marty announced that a new college and career Sunday School Class will begin June 2, on the first floor of the Beaver Educational Building. Bethany Becket sang, “I’m Here for You to Help You Find Your Wings.” What a good song for this day, and beautifully sung. Then each graduate was introduced and Mitzi read a report on each one, and the youth leaders gave them handshakes, hugs, and a gift. Parents and grandparents were welcome to take photos of this beautiful group.

The Baccalaureate Sermon was brought by Rob Ely, the Director of Baptist Campus Ministries at MU, and State Director of Youth Leadership Development. He reminded the graduates that this church had made a great investment in them. He read I John 2:6 “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” He urged the graduates to live and walk in Christ. He urged them to find a community of believers at whatever college or career they chose.

150th Celebration Kicks Off

Celebrating 150 years cannot be rushed. It takes time to properly recognize the years, events, ministries, missions, and people who came together to start a church, sustain it through difficult times, and grow it through dedicated service to Jesus Christ. That’s why we began six months early!

L to R: Pastor Tracy Mills, Pastor Tim Messinger, Pastor Jason Salmons, Pastor Jacob Marshall, Pastor Jeff Fetty, Pastor Greg Lunsford

Our first 150th Celebration event was a rousing success despite the oppressive heat! More than 100 Beulah Anners and friends gathered in the Family Center to feast on hamburgers, hotdogs, fixin’s, and homemade ice cream and treats! Sandwiched in the middle of eating and snacking were sermonettes and recollections delivered by four young men who experienced the mentorship of Pastor Paul Meadows, and are now pastoring churches in our nearby communities.

Pastor Jacob Marshall from Antioch Baptist Church prepared our hearts for the Word as he ministered to us in song before Pastor Tracy Mills opened with a Word from the Lord and recollections of his time at Beulah Ann. He noted the connection he has to our church through his son’s wife, who is a granddaughter of Pat and the late Dick Grass. He was also here when the church celebrated its 125th Birthday and was instrumental in putting together the time capsule we will open on December 29, 2024. He will return for the opening of the capsule!

Pastor Jeff Fetty followed. He reminisced about coming to Beulah Ann as a baby in 1977. He recalled Mrs. Morrison in the nursery and Mrs. Sharon Hayes in the kindergarten classroom. He remembered Dick Grass stopping him at the door one Easter when he was a little man dressed in his Easter Suit. “Are you preaching today,” Dick questioned? “No,” Jeff replied. “We’ll you’re dressed like a preacher.” Jeff said he never forgot that!

After Pastor Jacob led us to sing another song, Pastor Jason Salmons regaled us with his precious memories. “I said, ‘This church is too big, Gene. There’s too many people that go to this church. How could you know everybody’s name? … but it didn’t take too long to realize that everybody’s kin at Beulah Ann, so if you know one of them you know them all!” We are family, many by common human blood, many others by the precious blood of Jesus Christ!

Pastor Tim Messinger wrapped up the preaching. He recalled how his mother-in-law, Aillene Caldwell squeezed a promise out of him that he would get his daughter, Sarah, to church while she went on vacation. He fulfilled his promise, and while listening to Pastor Paul preach the gospel, he responded to the call and gave his life to the Lord.

Ice Creme was served and many hung out to fellowship for some time. It was a wonderful night of food, fellowship, and recollection, one of many more to come!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…

1 Corinthians 14:12 – Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the Church.

Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines “edify” as “to instruct and improve in moral and religious knowledge: uplift.” It also means to “build” and “establish.” To “edify” also means to build up. The Church should be all about building up. Jesus Christ came to build everlasting relationships between lost sinners and a Holy God. His ministry sought to strip away the man-made methods of mayhem devised to obstruct others from drawing near to God. His death ripped the fabric of separation, literally, in the temple and spiritually, by providing direct access to the throne of grace through faith in His finished work.

The Apostle Paul encourages believers to seek spiritual gifts to build up the Church, not the person. He counsels us to seek the best gift and excel at it. Not all have the gift of anointed preaching. However, many are capable teachers of the Word. Teachers with the gift instruct, encourage, and train others to grow in faith and practice. Gifted preachers explain the Word, exhort believers to repentance, and plead with the lost to exercise faith in Jesus Christ. The Church needs more spiritually gifted teachers and preachers.

How’s your faith? Is it strong? Could it be stronger? What about your Church? Is the preacher edifying or building up the Church through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word? If not, what are you doing about it? I encourage you to pray for him. Pray for the man God has called to break the Bread of Life in your hearing. Pray for a fresh anointing on him to excel at his work. Do you teach? Pray for the spiritual gift of prophecy. In this age of AI fakery, the Church desperately needs Holy Spirit-gifted instructors to proclaim the whole counsel of God.

Pastor Greg

The Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class has graciously allowed us to use their classroom for our historical displays. This room will be ready June 23, which you can look anytime. We are also hoping to have a new Church Directory completed by December, and an update to the church history that was written by Mildred Caldwell up through 1999.

GOOD NEWS NUGGETS

J  Adult Ministries gave each lady present on Mother’s Day a nice gift, a little flower pot filled with candy, a flower seed packet, and even a flower shaped ink pen! Thanks. Beautiful flower bouquets were presented to the oldest mother present, Viola Adkins at 93 years, and the mother with the youngest baby, Brooke Neal with 1½ month old son Carsen!

J A nice crowd gathered in the Family Center on Sat., May 11 for our annual Community Appreciation Dinner. As always, the men rolled up their sleeves and peeled potatoes and did all the work to present a wonderful meal with ham and turkey. The ladies only had to bring desserts, which were plentiful. Sue Short from Halfway Market provided beautiful potted plants for each table, the whole room was in bloom! The oldest mother at each table was awarded the flower on her table. Thank you, ABMM and all your helpers.

J The last week-end of April, campers gathered once again at Beech Fork State Park for our annual Spring Camp-o-Rama. Numbers were down a little, but everyone enjoyed the food, fellowship, and even some boat rides on the beautiful lake. Hope you can join in the fun in the fall.

LADIES ENJOY BIBLE STUDIES

The Ladies Bible Study has had a busy few months. The ladies have met monthly for fellowship, food and devotions. We watched Sight and Sound movie, “Jesus” enjoyed by everyone who attended. Ladies Bible Study completed a five-week study on 3:16 The Numbers of Hope by Max Lucado (John 3:16). Great fellowship, food and good attendance. Sessions: “A man named Nicodemus…came to Jesus at night;” Hope for the Hard Heart; For God so loved the world; The Heart He Offers; “He gave his one and only Son;” Heaven’s “Whoever” Policy; Whoever believes in him….; The Last Word on Life; “Shall not perish but have eternal life.” The sessions were thought provoking. “He loves. He gave. We believe. We live.”

Next Ladies Bible Study will be held in the fall. Hope you can attend.  I want to thank all the ladies who were able to attend. Great fellowship, food and sharing and discussing the lessons together.    ~~Connie Chapman

SPRING REVIVAL!

Evangelist Paul Michael Booth came ready to preach on Sunday, April 28. And Pastor Greg’s preaching had prepared our hearts. Paul Michael said he had been an evangelist for 25-26 years, then became a pastor nine years ago. He said revival is for Refreshing, Renewal, Rededication, and to get Reconnected. He used Luke 6:19 (the sick trying to touch Jesus for healing) and a cord from a dryer to illustrate reconnection. On Monday night, he preached from John 8:7 (Let him who is without sin cast the first stone), and brought rock to illustrate. He had all of us stretch out our arm with a fist, then symbolically “drop” the rock. On Tuesday, his text was Matt. 12:33 (The tree is known by his fruit). He offered two cups to Luke Lunsford (Pastor Greg’s son). Poor Luke chose the wrong one, and drank pure lemon juice. He could have had orange juice. Wednesday he used Mark 2:5 (Jesus saw the faith of the four who brought their friend for healing.) Thursday, he spoke on Isaiah 50:10 (Who fears the Lord?), and on the final night, we were reassured by John 14:1-6 (Let not your heart be troubled.) He said Jesus gives us peace, place, promise, and a path.

We had visiting choirs from Lighthouse Baptist, Antioch Baptist, Mt. Zion Baptist, and a special group called Creek Bank Choir. Of course, our own choir sang wonderfully.

Two young girls were saved and are soon to be baptized. Praise God for a wonderful revival.

 MOTHER IS THE BEST

My Mom is really great,

She’s sweet as she can be.

When I need some help,

She’s always there for me.

Mom loves me all the time,

Even when I’m a pest.

She always takes good care of me.

My Mother is the best.

GOLDENEER’S CONFERENCE

My friend Donna and I went to Parchment Valley for the Goldeneer’s Conference from the 6th to the 8th of May.

Pizza is always on the menu there around 11:30 on the first day. Everyone provides chips and sweets when we arrive. Jerry Losh, from Hurricane Baptist Church, is in charge of the conference and he is always a lot of fun and seems to know what we need. Most attendees are over 70 and we had one lady that was 90 yrs. old. She was very good at corn hole. She exercises at a place that has a pool where she lives. Jerry usually has something that is inspirational and other things that are fun, like corn hole and other outside activities, crafts, puzzles to put together and just getting to know each other. We had special singing by the Randy White Singers and a lawyer talked to us about our wills and other legal information for us as we get older. We stayed in the cabins up on the hill and they are very comfortable, like a motel room. Jerry always plans something that is interesting and fun.

Another conference is being planned for September 9th-11th of this year. Hope others will attend.                  ~~Alliene Caldwell

Worry is the darkroom in which negatives are developed.

Why do people pay to go up in tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

We don’t stop laughing because we grow old – we grow old because we stop laughing.
